Are you interested in preparing students to be the innovators and leaders? East Bay Innovation Academy is seeking a dynamic, innovative, and passionate part-time Director of Equity and Social Emotional Learning (DESEL)  for our Lower School program.
 
East Bay Innovation Academy is a 6-12 college preparatory public charter school in Oakland, CA with a mission of preparing a diverse group of students to be successful in college and to be thoughtful, engaged citizens who are leaders and innovators in a 21st century global world.  Through personalization and project-based learning, social-emotional learning and design thinking, and by leveraging best practices in curriculum design and technology, EBIA engages students in rigorous, 21st Century work.  We serve a diverse population of students, representing the racial, cultural, and socio-economic diversity of the Bay Area.
 
The DESEL serves as the source of programs and methodologies supporting EBIA’s core beliefs of diversity, community and the greater good, to work with students as they deepen their sense of social justice and civic responsibility.  Specifically, the Director of Equity & Socio-Emotional Learning focuses on Advisory, developing and implementing supports and interventions for student behavior, coaching teachers on knowing and connecting with students and developing a positive classroom learning environment, service learning, internships, clubs, and the daily ups and downs of learning in a rigorous academic environment.
 
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
 
Director of Social and Emotional Learning duties
  • Advisory: Development of the yearlong Social-Emotional Learning curriculum, in addition to leadership and support of overall teacher execution of the advisory program.
  • Positive Behavior Supports: Creation of systems and leadership of the school behavioral and disciplinary process, in addition to integration of restorative justice practices into the overall school behavioral program.
  • IEPs and 504s: Manage the implementation, tracking and development of IEP and 504 plans, including the supervision of education specialists and instructional aides.
  • Teacher Support: Coaching and leading professional development for teachers on knowing and connecting with students and developing a positive classroom learning environment.
  • After-School Program: Manage the after-school coordinator and support the implementation of the school's after-school program.
  • Grade Level Teams: Support of GLTs as it relates to advisory and behavioral support needs.
  • Understand, promote and support the mission, vision and guiding principles of the school Build a culture of high expectations: demonstrate excitement about learning and excitement about engaging children in learning; attempt to know every student attending the school.
  • Participate in other school activities as designated by school leadership.
 Site Administrator duties:
  • Collaborate with Leadership team to define and establish EBIA policies. Take ownership to understand, implement, and uphold EBIA policies:
    • With students and families. Includes academic policy, behavioral expectations, EBIA norms and culture.
    • With staff. Includes consistent and equitable application of human resource policies and CBA provisions, and training staff to have the clarity and tools to implement student-facing policies.
    • With candidates. Conduct consistent, equitable, and legal hiring processes.
    • With community. Be the face of EBIA administrative team with third party agencies when called upon during course of day.
  • Be knowledgeable about legal requirements, best practices, and EBIA duties and services in serving all populations, including special education, 504 and English language learner students.
  • Serve as Manager, performing tasks including goal setting, feedback and development.  For management of ETA unit members, this includes implementing a timely and complete PEP process.
  • Take ownership in the successful day-to-day operations of the school, including securing school property, exercising leadership and decision-making authority in unplanned circumstances, implementing procedures during emergencies.
  • Be a flexible team player, providing coverage as needed, for teachers and operations.

QUALIFICATIONS
 
Required
  • Bachelor’s degree and above in aligned area(s) of student support and supervision.
  • Experience supporting the social-emotional and behavioral needs of students, along with family engagement and community building.
  • A strong belief that all students can learn at the highest levels and that all students can be successful in college.
  • Self-starter, willing to innovate and create new blended and project-based curricula.
  • Ability to work successfully with heterogeneous groups of students and an ethnically & economically diverse student body.
  • Highly proficient in using technology and interested in the potential of technology to impact urban education.
  • Strong interest in implementing successful data driven instruction and a data driven culture.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to change; ability to work in a dynamic, creative and demanding learning environment.
  • Driven adult learner dedicated to his or her own professional growth, including learning new and innovative teaching practices. 
Preferred
  • Working knowledge of another language.
  • Knowledge of project based learning, social-emotional learning, and blended/optimized learning.
  • MA/MS in Education or Subject Area
